The Texas Appliance Mail-In Rebate Program requires residential consumers to replace and remove the old appliance(s) from their home using one of two options: disposal or recycling.
| Disposal | Recycling |
|
Disposal is defined as the old appliance is removed from the home by the retailer, contractor or resident and taken to a disposal facility, such as a city dump or landfill. It cannot be reused, refurbished or re-sold, and at a minimum refrigerants are captured in accordance with all local, state and federal laws.
|
Recycling is defined as the old appliance is removed from the home by the retailer, contractor or resident and taken to a recycling facility where:
- The appliance is de-manufactured.
- All hazardous materials are removed from the appliance and handled in accordance with federal, state and local laws.
- All recyclable materials (e.g., plastics, metal and glass) are sorted and reprocessed into raw materials for future use.
|
Residents must complete the disposal/recycling section of the application to verify that either proper disposal or recycling has occurred to be eligible for an appliance rebate.
Additional Recycling Information
See recycling FAQs on Texas Powerful Smart website.
Since the goal of Texas rebate programs are to save energy as well as help protect the environment, residents are encouraged to consider recycling old appliances. Recycling helps keep scrap metal out of landfills and avoids contamination of Texas natural resources.
A residential consumer may be eligible to receive an additional $75 recycling rebate in conjunction with an approved appliance rebate if the consumer chooses to go the extra step to recycle the replaced appliance instead of just disposing of it. A consumer is eligible for up to two recycling rebates.
As a courtesy source of information, a list of Recycling Agents is provided below. Residents are not required to use a Recycling Agent from the list.
Recycling Agents are defined as retailers or persons/entities that remove, receive or replace refrigerators, freezers, water heaters, room air conditioners, clothes washers, dishwashers, central air conditioners and heat pumps for the purpose of recycling the appliance(s).
Home Depot, Sears, Best Buy, Lowes and Fry's Electronics will recycle old appliances throughout Texas, however only when a qualified replacement appliance is purchased at and delivered by their store.
